About the Method

What is LEGO Serious Play?

LEGO Serious Play (LSP) is a facilitation methodology developed in the late 1990s by Johan Roos and Bart Victor, and further developed by Robert Rasmussen. LEGO Group was among the earliest and most prominent organisations to use the method, bringing its power for strategic thinking and team alignment into their own work before it spread globally.

The method uses three-dimensional LEGO models as the basis for dialogue, reflection, and decision-making. It is grounded in constructivist learning theory: we think better when we build, and we communicate more richly when we have something to point at.

As you progress through the method, individual builds give way to richer techniques: landscape builds, which map how people, ideas, or elements relate to one another, and shared or team builds, where the group constructs a single model together. This certification also introduces systems builds, a more comprehensive way of modelling a system's relationships and dynamics. It is a serious strategic thinking tool, not a team-building exercise.

The method is used by Google, IKEA, NASA, and hundreds of universities and organisations worldwide.

Training Agenda

A live online session, plus two full days in Ottawa

Training starts with a 2-hour Zoom call on 23 July, 7-9pm, covering the theory and background to LSP. You then experience the full depth of the method as a participant on Day 1, before shifting into the facilitator role on Day 2: designing your integration, planning your first workshops, and running live practice sessions with real participants.

Day 1, July 24 Experiencing the Method
Welcome & Skills Build
Cohort introductions, learning objectives, and a warm-up build that introduces metaphor and storytelling, your first hands-on experience building with LEGO as a thinking tool.
Individual Model Build
Each participant builds an individual response to a prompt, then shares the story of the model and the meaning of its parts.
Shared & Landscape Builds
Bringing individual models together two ways: a Landscape build, where each model keeps its own identity within a collective view, and a Shared build, where the group co-creates a single unified model.
Lunch & Short Warm-up Activity
A short reset activity after lunch, using metaphor and story to keep the group in LSP mode before the afternoon's work.
Final Activity & Workshop Design
Closing the day with a final build and an introduction to workshop design, including a look ahead at preparation for Day 2.

Day 2, July 25 Becoming the Facilitator
Warm-up & Draft Workshop Discussion
A short warm-up activity, followed by group discussion of the draft workshop plans participants bring with them into Day 2.
Introduction to Systems Models
Building a shared model with agents and connectors, then exploring scenarios by shifting agents, changing connections, and testing the impact of change. The physical model becomes a strategic thinking environment.
Lunch
A break before the afternoon's practice sessions.
Practice Workshops
The largest portion of Day 2. In pairs, you facilitate a real workshop, approximately one hour each, with your cohort peers and invited guests participating as genuine participants, not observers. You receive coaching and feedback from the master facilitators throughout.
Feedback, Final Discussion & Graduation
Group feedback on the practice sessions, a closing discussion, certification completion, and access to the global LSP Method community.

Common questions

Do I need prior facilitation experience to attend?
No prior LSP experience is required. The training is designed for professionals who already facilitate in some capacity, whether in education, HR, OD, or coaching, and want to add a structured 3D methodology to their practice. General facilitation experience is beneficial but not a prerequisite.
What certification do I receive?
You receive the LEGO Serious Play facilitator certification through LSP Method, the professional certification body for the method, with 2,000+ certified facilitators globally. The certification is issued by LSP Method in partnership with Serious Play Methods.
What happens on Day 2 with the practice workshops?
Working in pairs, each participant facilitates a real workshop of approximately one hour. Your cohort peers participate as genuine participants, and we also invite guests to join for this portion of the day, so you're facilitating a real group, not a simulated exercise. The master facilitators coach and debrief throughout.
Where exactly is the training held?
The training is in-person in Ottawa, Ontario. The specific venue is being confirmed and will be communicated to registered participants at least three weeks before the training dates.
How does the Bring a Buddy rate work?
If you and a colleague register together, both of you pay CAD $1,750 each instead of the standard rate. Simply note your buddy's name on the registration form. Both registrations need to reference each other for the rate to apply.
Does the price include tax?
No. All prices listed are before HST, which applies to in-person training delivered in Ontario. HST will be added when your registration is confirmed.
What is the cancellation policy?

Will this certification be offered in other cities?
Yes. We are running cohorts across Canada through summer 2026: Vancouver (July 2-3), Toronto (July 30-31), Calgary (late August), and Victoria (date TBC), plus Ho Chi Minh City (July 20-21). If you would prefer a different city or date, contact us to be added to the waitlist.
